Situated in a back corner of the Curry Student Center is the office of Green Line Records – Northeastern University’s fully functioning, student-run record label.
Named after the MBTA subway that runs through campus, Green Line Records is an organization that is unique to Northeastern that not many other schools can compete with. Green Line acts as a helping hand to students interested in working in the music industry, as well as to local Boston artists.
Founded in 1998, the organization has remained divided into five departments – Artists & Repertoire (A&R), Recording, Events, Marketing, and Merchandise and Design. Each department is overseen by a department head, who are all overseen by the President, William Kast.
Part of what makes Green Line so desirable to artists is the fact that they offer free studio time. Usually, an artist will have to pay thousands of dollars to record a song in a very limited amount of time. At Green Line, because the recording is free, artists can take as long as they want to record a track at no expense of their own.
Once a track is finalized, it is digitally released by the artist and promoted by their designated Green Line marketing team. While Green Line does not often do physical releases, they do have the ability to put the digital recording on tapes or cd’s, and can order vinyl recordings as long as the artist pays for the purchasing.
